Ruth is drawn to character driven, cathartic stories be they comedies or dramas or better still, both. Whether writing or directing, Ruth has been noted for her ability to create stories with a strong engine that have the power not only entertain, but also to inspire and move.

Ruth Meehan is a writer/director who has been creating multiple award-winning & nominated work for both film and television in Ireland and Britain since the early 2000’s. She is a graduate of the NFTS in London (MA in Screenwriting) where her short film Numb, received a special commendation at the Edinburgh Film Festival.

Ruth’s first short after college, And The Red Man Went Green was funded by Universal Studios, London. It won several major prizes including the Special Jury Prize at the Tehran Film Festival; the Prix Canal+ at Brest; the Depict Award at the Encounters Short Film Festival in the UK; and the Kodak Prize, Raindance Film Festival, UK. Her short film Lilou, won the Judges Award at the 30 second film festival at the Galway Film Fleadh. Her other short films, The Measure Of A Man and Men And Women (an adaption of a short story by Clare Keegan) were both screened at the Galway Film Festival and as part of RTEs Shortscreen strand.

Adventurous by nature and with a nose for a good story, over the course of her career, Ruth has travelled the world making hard hitting and award-winning documentaries for RTE, including the groundbreaking social documentary series, What In The World, the grueling, Hostile Environment, presented by Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones) and an intrepid adventure into the Amazon rainforest in Traveller’s Guide.

She has also directed numerous hours of arts and travel programming for RTE. Her experience in the field of documentary and factual has contributed to Ruth’s fluid and vibrant style of storytelling. It has given her the opportunity to develop an eye for what is alive in the moment, an ability to collaborate and inspire in order to problem solve and the focus and discernment to know how to safeguard the story she is telling.

Ruth has developed four feature films with funding from Screen Ireland including her debut feature film, The Bright Side (2020). The Bright Side was the recipient of the Audience Award at the 2020 Cork International Film Festival, the Jury Award Honorable Mention at the Sonoma International Film Festival in California and the Grand Logis, Prix du Public in Rennes in Brittany in 2022. It had its theatrical release in Ireland in August 2021 and is available online on Amazon Prime in Ireland and the UK.

More recently Ruth has been focusing on directing tv drama along with developing a number of feature films. She cut her teeth on the highly popular, Virgin Media crime drama series, ‘Red Rock’ for Element Pictures and thoroughly enjoyed a stint more recently directing on the Lionsgate financed drama series, ‘Northern Lights’ for Deadpan Pictures, Dublin.

Ruth is committed to giving back to the Film and TV industry in Ireland. She is an active board member of The Screen Director’s Guild of Ireland, a member of the Writer’s Guild of Ireland and Women in Film and TV, Ireland.
